Doug Crew, a trustee on the Peoria Public Library Board, has left the race for the 5th District City Council seat.

Crews' departure from the race leaves only Dan Irving and Gloria Cassel-Fitzgerald on the ballot  to fill the seat. This eliminates the need for a primary for this seat.

This morning Thomas Bride, executive director of the Peoria Election Commission, said Crew came in Thursday morning and filed a request to withdraw.

The election commission will meet at 8 a.m. Tuesday to consider that request.

"We can change the ballot and that's what we'll do. We haven't sent the ballots off yet to be printed. It was close," Bride said.

"This will eliminate the need for a primary."

The seat, now held by Pat Nichting, is up for grabs because Nichting is running for city treasurer.
